King moves

The King can move one square in any direction as shown at the right. Click the arrows to see the kings move. When the King is attacked, it is called check and the King has to move, a piece has to take the attacking piece, or a piece has to block the attacking piece's route. You cannot put your king into check. If your king is in check and nothing can stop the piece from attacking it, it is called checkmate. If you get checkmated you lose the game. This is why the King is the most valuable piece in chess.
